Catholic Social Teaching

Catholic Social Teaching (CST) is at the heart of life at St Catherine. Rooted in Scripture, Church teaching and the example of Jesus Christ, it calls us to recognise the dignity of every person and to work for the common good. Inspired by our mission, “living life to the full” (John 10:10), CST helps us to understand how we are called to love, serve and care for others in our daily lives.

At St Catherine, Catholic Social Teaching is not just something we learn about—it is something we live out. It shapes our relationships, our decisions and the way we respond to the needs of others. Through CST, our pupils learn the importance of justice, compassion and responsibility, both within our school community and in the wider world.

We follow the Rooted in Love programme by Caritas Westminster, beginning each half-term with a focus on a different CST theme. These themes guide our prayer, learning and actions, and help to direct our local charitable work. In this way, our children are encouraged to put their faith into action, becoming active citizens who seek to make a positive difference in their community and beyond.

 Dignity
Every person is made in the image and likeness of God and is unique and precious. We are called to treat everyone with love, respect and kindness.
“God created mankind in his own image.” (Genesis 1:27)

Dignity of Workers
Every person has the right to work and to be treated fairly, with respect and dignity. Work allows people to use their gifts, support their families and contribute to society. We are called to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to flourish and to be valued for who they are and what they do.
“The worker deserves his wages.” (Luke 10:7)

Community and Participation
Everyone has a part to play in making the world a better place. We are called to use our gifts and talents to serve others and contribute to our communities.
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others.” (1 Peter 4:10)

Option for the Poor
Jesus teaches us to care especially for those who are poor or vulnerable. We are called to stand up for fairness and help those most in need.
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these… you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40)

Care for Creation
The world is God’s gift to us, and we are responsible for caring for it. We are called to protect the Earth and use its resources wisely.
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” (Genesis 2:15)

Solidarity and Peace
We are one global family. We are called to live in peace, support one another and work for justice in our world.
“If one part suffers, every part suffers with it.” (1 Corinthians 12:26)
